Artist Shows How All The Roman Emperors Looked By Using Facial Reconstruction, AI, And Photoshop

If you've ever set foot in a museum of Greek and Roman art, you've probably seen the rows of tranquil-looking concrete busts. They do, however, have no pupils in the eyes, lack any sort of color, and in general, get kinda repetitive after the third and fourth display hall. But the artist named Haround Binous is bringing the dusty emperors back to life in a series of hyper-realistic illustrations. The guy from Université de Lausanne, Switzerland is combining facial recognition AI, Photoshop, and historical references to revive all the Roman emperors, from Augustus to Valentinian III. Digital artist Marina Amaral specializes in photo colorization and recently updated the last images of a 14-year-old Polish prisoner in Auschwitz. Breathing life into the black-and-white pictures, Amaral managed to visually emphasize the tragic past of Czeslawa Kwoka. Originally, the images were taken by Wilhelm Brasse, better known as the “famous photographer of Auschwitz concentration camp.” “I distinctly remember [the] picture of this particular girl inmate,” he said in an interview. “It’s because she looked so young, so disarmingly girlish.” When she arrived at the camp, she couldn’t understand what was being said to her. “So this woman Kapo (a prisoner overseer) took a stick and beat her about the face.
